.the way things are.

This morning I had a conversation with B about things we eat and where they come from. It started with this:

B: "Mom, I know that people eat deer. I know that they shoot them and then chop them up and put them on sticks and cook them over a fire."

Me: (Wow, that was graphic.) "Really...is that how they do it?! Where did you learn that?"

B: "Just from me." (a long pause) "...But mom, what do deer have in them?"

Me: "Do you mean, what do we eat from them?"

B: "Yes."

Me: "Well, we eat their meat...it's called venison. But you have actually never had deer meat."

B: "Well, I have had meat though."

Then I tell him the different kinds of meat and where they come from (beef, pork, chicken, turkey...). Then the conversation turns to eggs...

B: "Well, mom, what about eggs? We get those from chickens right?"

Me: "Yes."

B: "So the chicken gets the egg out and then we take it? (I nod) But there isn't a baby chick inside when we crack it....?"

Me: (Oh boy, how to explain this one...will he ever eat eggs again?) "Well, we get the egg from the chicken before it turns into a baby chick."

B: "So we take the baby away from the mama chicken?! ....We really shouldn't do that."

Me: "Well, that's how things work B. God provides food for us in ways that we don't always understand. Without eggs, we couldn't make a lot of things."

B: "But chickens need kids ya know!"

Oh the joys of teaching little ones...he never fails to make me laugh! Thank you God for giving B a heart for others...even chickens!
